Global warming is a term almost everyone is familiar with. But, its meaning is still not clear to most of us. So, global warming refers to the gradual rise in the overall temperature of the atmosphere of the Earth. There are various activities taking place which have been increasing the temperature gradually. Global warming is melting our ice glaciers rapidly. This is extremely harmful to the Earth as well as humans. It is quite challenging to control global warming; However, it is not unmanageable. The first step in solving any problem is identifying the cause of the problem. The causes include

the release of greenhouse gasses which are not able to escape from Earth, causing the temperature to increase. Deforestation, mining, excess use of automobiles and fossil fuels are also some of the causes. To overcome those causes we should have plants, limited use of automobiles and fossil fuels. We should control use of mining and natural resources.

2) Some of the causes of global warming are ……………………….

Ans: Deforestation, mining, greenhouses, excessive use of automobiles and fossil fuels.

3) Some of the solutions on global warming are ……………………….

Ans: Planting trees, limited use of automobiles, control over mining and natural resources.

4) Suggest a suitable title ………………………………….

Practice:

 Read the passage and solve the activities.

Once upon a time, in a desert far away, there was a rose who was so proud of her beautiful looks. Her only complaint was growing next to an ugly cactus. Every day, the beautiful rose would insult and mock the cactus on his looks, all while the cactus remained quiet. All the other plants nearby tried to make the rose see sense, but she was too swayed by her own looks. One scorching summer, the desert became dry and there was no water left for the plants. The rose quickly began to wilt. Her beautiful petals dried up, losing their lush colour.

1) Plants mentioned in the passage ……………………………………………………………………………….

2) The complaint of rose ………………………………………………………………………………………………

3) Action and reaction of the rose and cactus ………………………………………………………………..

4) Effect of scorching summer ………………………………………………………………………………………

5) Do you agree with the behaviour of rose? Why? ……………………………………………………….

Ans:

  1. The plants mentioned in the passage are the rose and the cactus. Other plants are also mentioned, but they are not specified by name.
  2. The complaint of the rose is that she is growing next to an ugly cactus.
  3. The rose insults and mocks the cactus, while the cactus remains quiet and does not respond.
  4. The scorching summer causes the desert to become dry, leading to a lack of water for the plants.
  5. No, I don’t think the rose’s behavior was right. The rose insulted and made fun of the cactus just because it looked different. This shows that the rose was being mean and didn’t care about how the cactus felt. It’s not fair to judge others only by how they look. We should treat everyone with respect and kindness, no matter what they look like.

Extension/Parallel Activity/Reinforcement:

 Teacher provides non-textual passages and asks student to find the main themes, problems and their solutions.

The Amazon Rainforest is a vast expanse of tropical rainforest in South America, covering an area of over 6 million square kilometres. It is home to an astonishing diversity of flora and fauna, including over 2,000 species of fish and over 400 species of mammals. The Amazon rainforest is an important source of oxygen for the planet, as it produces more than 20% of the world’s oxygen.

Ans:

Main Themes:

1. Biodiversity: The Amazon rainforest is a rich and diverse ecosystem with many different plants and animals.

2. Environmental Conservation: Protecting the Amazon rainforest is important because it produces a lot of oxygen and helps fight climate change.

Problems:

* Deforestation: The rainforest is being cut down mainly for farming, logging, and building, which is harmful to the environment.

* Illegal Activities: Illegal logging, mining, and wildlife trade are harming the rainforest and the communities living there.

* Climate Change: The rainforest is affected by climate change, which can harm its plants, animals, and overall health.

Solutions:

Protecting Laws: Strong laws and enforcement are needed to stop deforestation and illegal activities in the rainforest.

Sustainable Practices: Using sustainable farming and land-use methods can help reduce harm to the rainforest.

Supporting Indigenous Communities: Respecting the rights of indigenous communities and providing them with support can help protect the rainforest and their way of life.
