My father was a medical professional working for a private company in Raniganj in West Bengal. The officers of the company were housed in individual bungalows inside a large campus. Our house was in a corner of the campus. The officer’s club was adjacent to the boundary wall of our garden. The compound was luxurious with green grass, colourful flowers and a host of tall and majestic trees. The seasonal vegetables in the kitchen gardens of the households and the magnificent trees constantly attracted squirrels and many species of birds; a group of langurs had even made their den in an aswatha tree nearby. They had all become a part and parcel of our existence and daily life.

A small incident on a Saturday afternoon left a profound effect on me and unfolded before my eyes a whole new dimension to the wonders of God’s creation. It was a few days into the Puja vacation. If

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,

And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream and not make dreams your master;

If you can think and not make thoughts, your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two imposters just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth, you’ve spoken,

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with Kings, nor lose the common touch;

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

And which is more you’ll be a Man, my son!

(2) It can be ……………..(cany/difficult) to stand up for yourself when you are being bullied.

(3) Bullies use…………………(power/money) to hurt people.

(4) Always bring the bullying to the attention of………………..

(a child/an adult)

Ans:

1. Bullying can take many forms.

2. It can be difficult to stand up for yourself when you are being bullied.

3. Bullies use power to hurt people.

4. Always bring the bullying to the attention of an adult.

Bullying means to be mean to another kid or hurt and frighten him again and again. Bullying can take many forms. It can be teasing, threatening to hurt someone, telling lies about someone,

not including others in order to make them feel bad, or it can be actually yelling at or hitting someone. Bullying can also take place over through text messages or emails, or by posting rumours on sites like Facebook, passing around embarrassing pictures or videos.

Being bullied makes kids feel different, powerless, unpopular and alone. It can be difficult to stand up for yourself when you are being bullied. The bully seems more powerful than you are.

Being bullied can lead to feeling sick or having problems at school. It can even lead some kids to want to be a bully themselves. There are a lot of reasons why kids bully other kids. Some want to copy their friends. Some think that being a bully will make them respected by other kids or make them popular. Sometimes bullies think that they are better than their victims and so they bully other. kids to prove it. No matter what the reasons behind it, or what form it takes, bullying is wrong.

Bullies use power to hurt people. Bullies might use physical strength. They might use popularity or being smart. Or they may use secrets that they know about to hurt other kids. And bullying isn’t just bad for the kid being bullied. It’s bad for the bully too. Kids who are bullies often grow up to have problems like getting into fights and dropping out of school.

You may know what to do if you witness bullying. It may make you feel depressed or worried. You may not feel safe. These feelings may make you want to join in the bullying or be silent, so as not to get bullied yourself. Or may be the bullying makes you so angry that you stand up to the bully yourself. The best and the safest thing to do is always to bring the bullying to the attention of an adult, who will put a stop to it.

A2. List four ways that bullies might use to bully others. (2)

Ans:

1. Verbal bullying: This includes name-calling, teasing, taunting, or using hurtful language to demean or intimidate someone.

2. Physical bullying: Involves physical aggression such as hitting, pushing, tripping, or any form of physical harm or threat.

3. Social or relational bullying: This type involves excluding someone, spreading rumours, gossiping, or manipulating social situations to isolate or embarrass others.

4. Cyberbullying: Bullying through digital means, including social media, texts, emails, or online platforms, where hurtful messages, threats, or embarrassing content are shared publicly or privately to target an individual.

A3. Choose the correct phrases and complete the following sentences (2)

(in order to, to stand up for, put a stop)

(i) Roma wanted to ………. to the quarrel with her brother

(ii) Mother prepared a delicious cake ………. send it on Soho’s birthday.

Ans:

(i) Roma wanted to put a stop to the quarrel with her brother.

  2. Be Kind: Encourage being nice and supportive. Stand up for others and don’t let bullying happen.
  3. Set Rules: Make clear rules against bullying with clear punishments. Tell everyone how to report bullying, and make sure action is taken.
  4. Help Everyone: Support those who are bullied and also help those who bully. Victims need care, and bullies might need guidance to change their behaviour.

(B) Summary Writing: (5 marks)

Read the passage given in Q No. 4(A) and write a summary of it. Suggest a suitable title to the summary

Ans:

Bullying: Understanding and Acting

Bullying is being mean to others in many ways, like teasing or hurting them repeatedly. It makes kids feel alone and weak, causing problems at school and making some kids want to bully others too. Bullies use power to hurt, which leads to problems for both the bully and the

victim later on. If you see bullying, it’s safest to tell a grown-up who can stop it.

If we join, we can make our village better and show others how it’s done. It’s not just about winning awards; it’s about making our village awesome. I’d love it if you could join me. Let’s make a change together!

‘Importance of Girls’ Education’

Hello everyone,

Today, we’re here for “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign. On this occasion I would like to talk on ‘Importance of Girls’ Education’. It’s crucial for girls to get a good education.

First of all, let’s agree that girls and boys should have the same chances in life. It’s not fair if some kids get better opportunities just because of their gender. Education is a big part of making things fair for everyone.

We’ve noticed that there are fewer girls being born compared to boys, and that’s worrying. But if we make sure all girls get a good education, families will understand that every child matters, no matter if they’re a girl or a boy.

When girls go to school, it’s not just good for them. It’s good for everyone! Educated girls grow up to be strong women who can help their families and make their communities better. They can do amazing things when they have the chance to learn.

Giving girls a good education also helps them find jobs and be independent. When girls are educated, they can contribute a lot to making our country better and stronger.

So, when we talk about girls’ education, we’re talking about making our future brighter. It’s about giving every girl the chance to be her best and make a difference in the world.

Let’s promise to support girls’ education because when we do that, we’re making our whole world a better place.

Thank you!

They are found in Great Northern plain, lower valleys of Narmada and Tapti and Northern Gujarat. These soils are renewed every year. They are suitable for crops like rice, wheat, jute.

Black soils- These soils are made up of volcanic rocks and lava flow. They are concentrated over Deccan Lava Tract which includes parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. They are black. Apart from cotton cultivation, these fertile soils are suitable for growing cereals, oilseeds, citrus fruits and vegetables.

Title: “The Journey’s End”

Once upon a time, in a cozy town where everyone knew each other, there were three best friends: Maya, Sam, and Alex. They loved exploring and having adventures together.

One sunny day, they found an old map in Maya’s attic. It showed a secret treasure hidden deep in the forest. Excited, they decided to find it.

Their journey was like a big, fun puzzle. They walked through tall trees, crossed streams, and solved tricky clues. Sometimes they got scared, but they helped each other stay brave.

Every clue brought them closer to the treasure. But along the way, they realized that the real treasure was their friendship and the cool things they experienced together.

Finally, they arrived at an old school in the woods. It was a bit spooky, but they went inside. They found a special chest. Instead of gold, it held old pictures and things from long ago. It made them think about how awesome their journey had been.

Looking at the pictures made them happy. They learned that the best part of any adventure is the memories you make with your friends. Even though their journey ended, the memories stayed with them forever.

Leaving the school, they felt super close and grateful for all the fun they had. Their adventure was over, but they knew their friendship was the biggest treasure of all.
