Use: (As soon as / No sooner… than

/ Hardly had …. When)

Use: As soon as:

Rules:

  1. By using as soon as we can join two separate sentences.
  2. Write As soon as before the sentence which shows first action.
  3. If in given single sentence there is a (as, when, or No sooner + helping verb) remove it and in place of it put as soon and connect other sentence by putting comma (,).

1. The driver saw a green signal. He started his car.

Ans: As soon as the driver saw a green signal, he started his car.

2. When the driver saw a green signal, he started his car,

Ans: As soon as the driver saw a green signal, he started his car.

3. As the driver saw green signal, he started his car.

Ans: As soon as the driver saw a green signal, he started his car.

4. He started his car as the driver saw green signal.

Ans: He started his car as soon as the driver saw green signal.

As soon as the driver saw a green signal, he started his car.

5. No sooner did the driver saw a green signal than he started his car.

Ans: As soon as the driver saw a green signal, he started his car.

Examples:

  1. I finish my homework. I help my mother.
  2. When he saw a tiger, he cried out.
  3. No sooner was he free than he came home.
  4. The boys rushed to the ground as the bell had rung.
  5. When I stood near the pool, I noticed bubbles in the water.

 

Use: No sooner……than

Formula: No sooner + Helping verb + s. +v. …. than (join another sentence) do, does, did.

e.g. 1. The driver saw a green signal. He started his car.

Ans: No sooner did the driver see a green signal than he started his car.

Examples:

  1. I finish my homework. I help my mother.

Ans: No sooner do I finish my work than I help my mother.

  1. When he saw a tiger, he cried out.

Ans: No sooner did he see a tiger than he cried out.

  1. As soon as he was free, he came home.

Ans: No sooner was he free than he came home.

  1. The boys rushed to the ground as the bell had rung.

Ans: No sooner had the bell rung than the boys rushed to the ground.

  1. Hardly had I stood near the pool when I noticed bubbles in the water.

Ans: No sooner had I stood the pool than I noticed bubbles in the water.

Use: Hardly had ……when

Or

Scarcely had……when

Formula:

 

Hardly had + s. + ppv. + ……when (another sentence)

Examples:

  1. I finish my homework. I help my mother.

Ans: Hardly had I finished my homework when I help my mother.

  1. When he saw a tiger, he cried out.

Ans: Hardly had he seen a tiger when he cried out.

Scarcely had he seen a tiger when he cried out.

  1. As soon as he was free, he came home.

Ans: Hardly had he freed when he came home.

Scarcely had he freed when he came home.

  1. The boys rushed to the ground as the bell had rung.

Ans: Hardly had the bell rung when the boys rushed to the ground

  1. No sooner did I stand near the pool than I noticed bubbles in the water.
  2. Ans: Hardly had I stood near the pool when I noticed bubbles in the water.

EXAMPLES:

  1. The race started, we were looking for Ravi.
  2. I saw him looking at his watch. I decided to evaluate his wound.
  3. My eyes filled with tears when I heard the reply.
  4. They finished the job and got into the lift.
  5. No sooner did I find mobile than I became mad with joy.
  6. As soon as he came, she went away.
