SECTION – 1: PROSE

(Reading for Comprehension, Language Study, Summary and Mind Mapping)

Q. 1. (A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below: (12 Marks)

At a corner of Sixth Avenue electric lights and cunningly displayed wares behind plate-glass made a shop window attractive. Soapy took a stone and dashed it through the glass. People came running, around the corner, a policeman in the lead. Soapy stood still with his hands in his pockets, and smiled at the sight of brass button.

“Where’s the man that done that?” inquired the officer agitatedly.

“Don’t you think that I might have had something to do with it?” said Soapy, with a friendly voice, as one greets good fortune.

The policeman refused to accept Soapy even as a clue. Men who smash windows do not remain to chat with the police. They take to their heels. The policeman saw a man half-way down the block running to catch a car. With drawn club he joined in the pursuit. Soapy, with disgust in his heart, drifted along, twice unsuccessful.

On the opposite side of the street was a restaurant of no great pretensions. It catered to large appetites and modest purses. Its crockery and atmosphere were thick; its soup and napery thin. Into this place Soapy betook himself without challenge. At a table he sat and consumed beefsteak, flapjacks, doughnuts and pie. And then he told the waiter the fact that the minutest coin and himself were total strangers.

“Now, get busy and call a cop,” said Soapy. ‘And don’t keep a gentleman waiting.”

“No cop for you,” said the waiter, with a voice like butter cakes and an eye like the cherry in the Manhattan cocktail. “Hey, Con!”

Neatly upon his left ear on the callous pavement two waiters pitched Soapy. He arose, joint by joint, as a carpenter’s rule opens, and dusted his clothes. Arrest seemed now but an elusive dream. The island seemed very far away. A policeman who stood before a drugstore two doors away laughed and walked down the street.

I don’t believe in taking the right decisions. I take decisions, I take decisions and then make them right.” One of them make them right. One of the Ratan Tata’s inspiring words which made me dream beyond shadows. I feel fortunate that I discovered him in the early stage of my life and now I am using his teachings to mould my future the way I want.

Even though Ratan Tata was born in a very posh family of India, he never took money and power for granted. He graduated from Riverdale country from New York, Ratan Tata began his career in the Tata Group working on the shop floor of Tata Steel. After working for almost 10

years he was appointed as the director-in-charge of the National Radio and Electronics Company Limited (NEL.CO) in order to help its struggling finances. He worked hard building a better consumer electronics division but the economic recession and union strikes prevented him from achieving success and this success helped Tata to be appointed as the chairman of the Tata Group of companies. He started with a very basic job in his father’s company and today he owns a billion

dollar company.

The tag of greatness does not come without making any sacrifices and this tag on Ratan Tata suits to its best. Tata group launched its passenger car Tata Indica in the year 1998 but Tata Indica was a failure in its first year and the experiment seemed to be failing. Many people started advising Ratan Tata that he should sell the passenger car business. Ratan Tata also agreed to this and a proposal was given to Ford, they showed interest too. The three-hour meeting at Ford headquarters in Detroit, chairman of Ford (Bill Ford) said to Ratan Tata. “Why did you enter in the passenger car business when you were not knowing of it. It will be a favour if we buy this business from you.”

Ratan Tata decided to move back home. While travelling he was very tense as the feeling of being insulted was on his mind. After earlier failures. Tata Motors did well with its business of passenger cars but in the same period, Ford did very bad. In 2008 when Ford was on its way of bankruptcy. Tata Group offered Ford to buy its luxury car brand. Jaguar. Land Rover. Ford arrived in Mumbai for the meeting, in the meeting Bill Ford said to Ratan Tata, you are doing a big favour for us by buying Jaguar- Land Rover is now owned by Tata Group and is currently making profits

A foot and light-hearted I take to the open road,

Healthy, free, the world before me,

The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose.

Henceforth I ask not good fortune,

I myself am good fortune,

Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing,

Done with indoor complaints, libraries, querulous criticisms,

Strong and content I travel the open road.

The earth., that is sufficient,

I do not want the constellations any nearer,

I know they are very well where they are.

I know they suffice for those who belong to them.

Still here I carry my old delicious burdens,

I carry them, men and women, I carry them, with me wherever I go,

swear it is impossible for me to get rid of them in return.

A. 3 I, feel that in the journey of man’s life the meaning and importance of road varies from man to man. It depends on our deeds. bad intentions for others it will certainly make the path of man’s life with many ups and downs.

Did you give a cheerful greeting to the friend who came along?

Or a churlish sort of “Howdy” and then vanish in the throng?

Were you selfish pure and simple as you rushed along the way,

Or is someone mighty grateful for a deed you did today?

Can you say tonight, in imparting with the days that’s slipping

That you helped a single brother of the many that you passed?

Is a single heart rejoicing over what you did or said;

Does a man whose hopes were fading now with courage look

Compare to interior part of our country these things are to be strictly followed in urban areas of especially while travelling| in overcrowded local trains and buses in metropolitan cities. Along with this one more thing is must that is wearing a mask. We, while going outside our house must wear mask as it is our shield to protect us from the virus. The prime minister of our country as well as central and state health minister are appealing us for the same. Along with vaccination as an alert citizen isn’t it our responsibility to follow these rules and regulation? If we would like to prevent the spread of this disease, aren’t we going to put our hands together? Many parts of India, Maharashtra are closed and there is complete lockdown. Il is a big financial loss for us and it will paralyse the economy of the country. Hence for our safety and security we must come together and follow all| these rules and regulations of government. Let’s take a pledge that today onwards at all social places I will wear mask and will follow social distance.

At the end. I conclude my speech with thank you to you all for listening me with a patience, Jai Hind jay Maharashtra.

(3) Expansion of Idea:

Expand the following idea by using the following points.

‘Time and tide wait for none’.

  • Meaning of the proverb
  • Importance of time
  • Proper time management
  • Add your own points

Ans.

Time and tide wait for none”

The meaning of the proverb:

The above proverb means that once time lost is lost forever. Whenever we get an opportunity, we must make the best of it and if we can’t make use of it, it is lost forever. Both time and tide have its own course. Both does not wait for anyone. We must act immediately when proper time

for taking some action comes. Once we lost an opportunity, there is no meaning in regretting it. In| short, this proverb means that we need to do our duty in time.

Importance of time and time management:

If we students are wasting our time in colleges and school. We will miss golden opportunity of taking sound and effective education. We won’t realize the loss unless

we grow up. We all know the farmer dries the hay when the sun shines, if he does it in rain or in rainy season it will decay. Look at the blacksmith he strikes the iron when it is hot and then only, he can give the desired shape to it. Indirectly one need to have a proper management of time else we will not make any progress. Our growth will become stagnant like a water in a ditch.

Conclusion: in the conclusion: I can say that it is unwise to delay any action on our part. When we are presented with an opportunity, we must decide quickly and act promptly without wasting time. Later on, regretting about lost opportunity will do nothing to us.

“Mere Desh Ki Dharti”

Story/ Theme: ‘Mere Desh ki Dharti” is about the journey of two friends who find themselves. but also explores the issue of farmer’s debts, suicides and much more. Ajay and Sameer are engineers from the city with similar problems, Ajay aspires to have had own start-up but faces setback. Sameer slogs it off to get a promotion to ask for his rich girlfriend’s hand. But their dreams come crashing down and they are out of jobs. Disillusioned and dejected the two decide to die by suicide, though not in the chaos of the city but in a village, so that everyone thinks they have run away and won’t look for them. They arrive at Salamatpur in MP where the poor villagers are generous to fault and peculiar in equal measures- garishly dressed singers. an Elvis Presley lookalike at Mela. and senile Dadi with scratching tongue. Scratch the surface of the lively milieu, and there is the darkness of farmer suicides. The duo wants to right the wrongs but stirs up the hornet’s nest with the local bank manager who gets back at them by punishing the farmers and asking them to clear their debts within six months or surrender their lands. The upset folks want to throw the guys out but Ajay believes that they can get out of their misery if they work as a unit. The second half of the movie is| enjoyable till one gets the glimpse of the typical over-tlhe-top bumpkins.

Producer/ director & Characters: This movie is directed by Faraz Haider and is produced by Vaishali Sarwankar under the banner of Carnival Motion Pictures. The film portrays the harsh realities of farmers in the villages of India. The story of the movie is written by Neel Chakraborty. Divyendu Sharma as Ajay and Anant Vidhat as Ajay’s friend Samcer. Anupriya Goenka as Jhumki, Inaamulahaq as Pappan Khan.

Brijendra Kla as Dubeji. Rajesh Sharma as Kisahanlal. Avantika Khatri as Priyanka Khurana & Fraukh Jaffer as Daadi have played main roles in the movie.

Special features: The film’s strongest point is its actors- lead and supporting. While Divyendu shines in his performance as the in1pulsive and hot-headed happy camper. Anant Vidhat as pessimistic and serious Sameer holds his ground. It is Inaamulhaque (Pappan Khan) who deserves a special mention as the oddball benjoo

party guy and shayar who hold everything together. Bijendra Kla as the evil Dubey ji is great too.

Music/Dance /Songs & Photography: the music of the film is composed by Vikram Montrose and the title song is sung by Sukhwinder Singh. Other songs are sung by Supriya Pathak, Farhad Bhivandiwala and Ali Aslam Shah.

My opinion about the movie: This movie has got three stars. It is an average movie. It is worth watching one

Necessity of Social Awareness

Archive V

|I as an individual feel that though we are living in 21st century still our behaviour in

many aspects are barbaric and inhuman towards many issues. In this modern world we need to create almost about all things like social awareness, about traffic rules, about environment about tree plantation and many more things are there which we can say need to be made people aware about. The thing is that we have to start this thing from school itself at early age because young children are having receptive mind and learn it quickly. School environment is the best thing for them to teach. Once it is taught their parents too can understand it through them and slowly, we can bring change in our society.

Social Awareness regarding Traffic Rules: today vehicular traffic on all roads have increased like anything and the country like India which has a huge population and wide range of roads need awareness about traffic rules. Youngsters who are riding two wheelers and four wheelers need to be made sensitive about it. No doubt while issuing licence to them their driving test and written exam is conducted still if we will see the number ot accidents on roads in India every day, we will understand the severity of it. Majority of the accidents are taking place due to drivers mistake like not wearing helmet, not following traffic signals, over speeding, pillion rider is not wearing helmet, drunk and drive. No doubt our government is doing its best but as the citizen of our country we need to be aware about these rules and me must follow these rules.

Social Awareness about Environment: this is one more thing we all have to bring social

awareness. Due to deforestation, urbanisation and industrialisation environmental degradation is maximum. For road construction, for constructing buildings, to develop cities, for paper for all we are cutting trees but nobody is bothered about planting trees. We all know we get oxygen from trees and they absorb carbon dioxide from the air and without oxygen we can’t survive hence for our survival we need trees. Trees prevent soil erosion, hold water, gives us shade, fruits and what not. Some organisations are doing their best to protect the nature and environment but we all need to join our hands together for to save this earth. Even the cycle of nature/seasons has got disturbed due to it.

Conclusion: these are the only few things we see but there are many other issues where we need social awareness like segregating dry and wet garbage, stop wastage of water, disposal of hazardous chemicals and bio-medical waste. In short along with government, NGO’S we as an individual have to come forward and start following all these things from our own house. If this will happen, we can expect in near future at least some changes in this world and it will be heaven for we all.
