Appreciations of Std: 9th poems
1.1. Walk a little slower……
1. Title– The title of the poem is ‘Walk a little slower’
2. Poet/Author – The poem is by an anonymous (unknown) poet.
3. Rhyme Scheme – The rhyme scheme of the stanzas is ‘abcb’.
4. Figure of Speech – The figure of speech in the poem is ‘metaphor’
5. Theme / Central Idea – The importance of the father as a role model is the central idea of the poem wants to observe and imitate the life led by his/ her father. Hence the child requests the father to be more considerate towards his/ her needs.
1.3. ‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers – |

3. Rhyme scheme – The rhyme scheme of the first 2 stanzas is
‘abcb’ whereas in the third stanza is ‘abab’.
4. Figure of speech –Personification: Here, the lifeless and abstract idea of ‘hope’ is portrayed as a ‘living little bird’.
5. Theme / central idea – The central idea or theme of the poem is the role played by the hope in our lives. According to the poetess, hope – the little bird that nests in our soul – keeps us going even in the most difficult of times and demands nothing in return.

4. Figure of Speech – The figure of speech in the poem is ‘Alliteration’– night time midnight – The sound of ‘T’ is repeated to create a poetic effect.
5. Theme / Central Idea –The world is full of opposites. The poet make comparisons between two things which is sometime very important in our life.

3. Rhyme scheme – The poem has no rhyme scheme. It’s a free verse.
4. Figure of speech – The figure of speech in the poem is ‘simile’. Except for the last two lines, the whole poem is a long string of smiles. The comparisons are made explicit with the use of ‘as’ throughout the poem.
5. Theme / central idea – The poem celebrates the diversityin the universe. The poem also reminds us that all sorts of people and things are needed to make our world beautiful. Highly contrasted things are existed in the world.
3.1‘Coromandel Fishers’ |
1. Title – The title of the poem is ‘Coromandel Fishers.’
2. Poet/Author – The poem is written by ‘Sarojini Naidu.’
3. Rhyme scheme – The rhyme scheme of the stanza is ‘aabb’
4. Figure of speech–
Personification – ‘The wind les asleep in the arm of the dawn like a child that has cries all night’
Simile– The wind is compared to a child.
Metaphor –Sea is our mother.” Sea is compared to mother without using ‘as’ or ‘like’.
5. Theme / central idea – The poem address the fishermen, telling that it is dawn and time for them to wake up and set out in their boats to harvest the wealth of the sea. The speaker urges the sleeping fishermen to wake up and prepare to ride the stormy waves of the sea, But the speaker believes that a life of hard work is much better.
3.3 ‘To a Butterfly’ |
1. Title – The title of the poem is ‘To a Butterfly’
2. Poet/Author – The poem is written by ‘William wordsworth’
3. Rhyme scheme –
1) The rhyme scheme of the first stanza is ‘aabbccb’
2. The rhyme scheme of the second stanza is ‘aabbcdccd’
4. Figure of speech– The figure of speech in the poem are
‘Inversion’.
E.g. 1 A little longer stay in sight,
Stay in sight a little longer
5. Theme / central idea – This poem which tells how childhood flies away like the butterfly. It tells us how a person’s childhood id very important and how that person must make well out of it and enjoy every moment of their childhood.
4.1. “What is Success?” |
1. Title – The title of the poem is “What is Success?”
2. Poet/Author – The poem is Ralph Waldo Emerson.
3. Rhyme scheme – The poem has no rhyme scheme. It’s a free verse.
6. Figure of speech – Alliteration”: sound ‘b’ is repeated ‘To leave the world a bit better.”
5. Theme / central idea –The poem is about success. Success is gives happiness and enthusiasm. A person who wants to be successful should have a positive attitude. He or she finds the best qualities in other people. A successful person wants the welfare of everyone.
4.4. ‘Silver’ |
1. Title – The title of the poem is ‘Silver.’
2. Poet/Author – Walter de la Mare. (1873-1956)
3. Rhyme scheme – The Rhyme scheme of the first stanzas is ‘aabb’. The rhyme scheme for the final stanza is ‘aabbcc.’
4. Figure of speech – a) ‘Slowly, silently, now the moon
Walks the night in her silver shoon.’ Alliteration– “Sound ‘S’ is repeated.
‘Couched in her kennel like a log’,
Simile– A dog that sleeps in kennel is compared with a log by the word ‘like.’
5. Theme / central idea – The poet has depicted the moon and moonlight in the night. It makes all the things silver. Hence, the things look shiny. The poet has given examples of animate and inanimate things such as fruits, trees, casements and cote etc.
